Walk Free is calling on NGOs, civil society organisations and survivor leaders around the world to contribute to the Government Response Survey.

This is an important research activity that will inform the 2027 Global Slavery Index (GSI).

The survey seeks insights on how governments have responded to modern slavery since 31 August 2022, including their efforts to protect and support survivors, strengthen legal frameworks, and prevent exploitation.

Understanding government action on modern slavery

Governments play a critical role in combating modern slavery, but policies and legislation do not always translate into action.

Walk Free’s Government Response Survey aims to capture what governments are doing in practice through the perspectives of those closest to the issue.

Civil society organisations and survivors are the first to see the impact of government action or inaction on people affected by modern slavery.

Their insights are vital to understanding how effectively governments are upholding their responsibilities to protect people at risk.

The findings will directly inform Walk Free’s assessment of government responses in the next Global Slavery Index, which tracks progress and accountability across 184 countries.

How to participate

The Government Response Survey takes approximately 35 minutes to complete.

Participants will have the option to attribute their responses either under their organisation’s name or anonymously.

A Walk Free team member may follow up by email to clarify information provided, but all identifying details will remain confidential and will not be shared externally.

Personal information, such as names and email addresses, will only be collected if provided voluntarily.

Walk Free is inviting NGOs and civil society groups working on issues such as human rights, labour exploitation, migration, and survivor support to take part.

These contributions will ensure that the 2027 Global Slavery Index reflects the lived realities of communities worldwide and helps drive stronger, evidence-based action to end modern slavery.
